Former NHLers Tocchet and Walz named assistant coaches in Tampa

The Tampa Bay Lightning have named Rick Tocchet, Wes Walz and Cap Raeder as assistant coaches to head coach Barry Melrose.

Tocchet is a 24-year NHL veteran both as a player and a coach.  He played 18 seasons in the NHL with Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington and Phoenix.

“Rick Tocchet is a borderline Hall-of-Famer with vast playing and coaching experience,” vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said in a statement.  “His already extensive hockey experience was only enhanced by the time he spent as a coach in Colorado and Phoenix, and we are happy to announce him as part of our coaching staff.”

Walz, a veteran of 13 seasons in the NHL, played in 607 career games with Boston, Philadelphia, Calgary, Detroit and Minnesota.  He was known as a defensive specialist in his career, amassing a plus-23 rating.

“Wes Walz has been a leader both on and off the ice his entire career in the National Hockey League,” said Lawton. “We are excited that he brings those qualities to our coaching staff.  He offers a level of dedication and desire to the Lightning bench that is unsurpassed.”

Raeder, a native of Needham, Massachusetts, has spent the previous 11 seasons in the San Jose Sharks organization.  He served as a professional scout for the previous nine years and also served as an assistant coach during the 2000-01 season.  Before joining the Sharks, Raeder served an assistant coach at the NHL level for nine seasons with Boston and Los Angeles.  He was an assistant on new Lightning head coach Barry Melrose’s staff with the Kings.

“Cap Raeder’s nine-plus seasons as an assistant coach and his more than nine seasons as a professional scout make him ideal for our coaching staff,” said Lawton. “ His experience in the NHL will prove to be invaluable.”

Very surprised they didn't keep Mike Sullivan. Aside from being a great young coach he's at least provide a little continuity from last year's staff. Not that he'll be out of work long, but it still probably would've been a good idea to keep him. Surprised Sullivan hasn't been mentioned more in connection with the Kings head coaching job, actually.

Good luck to TB with Tocchet. When Toc came back to Phoenix after his suspension, he totally killed the Coyotes' momentum and their power play went to crap. Maybe all he needs is a change of scenery though.

They should make Tocchet and Walz player/assistant coaches cause the Bolts could sure use some more veteran forwards. Dave, if Kuba and Picard are on the top pairing, they are in serious trouble. Picard would struggle to make the top 6 on most teams and Kuba wouldn't even crack the top 4 on half the teams. They will be better than last year but not by much. I can see Ovechkin scoring 75 goals next year when a third of his games will be against Tampa, Atlanta and Florida.

Which one of the new guys will be responsible for coaching the defense? Good Luck, 'cause you're going to need it. Maybe the forwards will be playing defense too! To hell with it all...no positions! just send 5 random skaters out on the ice, and see what happens! Bets anyone, as to how long the coaching staff lasts!!

I wonder what they have Jay Feaster doing these days, I see he is still listed as the GM, but all the decisions seem to come from Lawton.

Andy, before you start sounding off, try studying the personnel on the team. Faceoff.com is a great place to do your homework. The Lightning have a young group of D-men (many of whom have substantial talent) who will be anchored by Kuba and Picard. This may or may not be a playoff year (who knows what Barry will pull out of his hat?), but with Stamkos, Vinnie L (40 goals), Marty (25 goals), Vinnie P (33 goals), Vrbata (27 goals), Malone (27 goals), Jeff Halpern (20 goals) and the return of Artyukhin, plus Gary ('you talkin' to me?') Roberts, and Olie Kolzig, Mike Smith and Karri Ramo sharing the net, the Bolts are bound to be miles better than they were last year.

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
