Defenceman Brendan Witt signs two-year extension with Islanders

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - The New York Islanders have signed alternate captain Brendan Witt to a two-year contract extension worth US$6 million through the 2010-11 season.

In his two years with the Islanders, the defenceman played in 140 games with three goals and 18 assists. He often has been assigned the role of shutting down the opponent's top lines.

Originally drafted by Washington with the 11th overall pick in the 1993 NHL draft, Witt played 12 seasons in the NHL with Washington, Nashville and the Islanders. He signed a three-year contract with the Islanders in July 2006.

NO FAIR! After decades of making apologies for this team and its front office staff, I have only lately been in a position where I could compare this team favourably to the Leafs. Then they go and do this. Witt has been mostly unrealized potential since he joined the league. What, they couldn't muster the effort to get into the Jeff Finger sweepstakes? Who else is going to play for this team next year? And will anyone watch it?
