Joe Nieuwendyk returns to Leafs as special assistant to the GM

TORONTO - Former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joe Nieuwendyk is returning to the team as a special assistant to the general manager.

"Joe is an extremely intelligent individual, who has experienced success throughout his entire hockey career," GM Cliff Fletcher said in a statement Tuesday. "We will value his contributions on all hockey decisions and he will be a great asset to our organization."

Nieuwendyk, a 41-year-old native of Whitby, Ont., played 20 seasons in the NHL from 1986 to 2007 for Calgary, Dallas, New Jersey, Toronto and Florida. He won three Stanley Cups.

In 1,257 career NHL regular-season games, Nieuwendyk had 564 goals and 562 assists for 1,126 points. In 158 career playoff games, he recorded 116 points (66-50).

Nieuwendyk had 50 points (22-28) in 64 games for Toronto in 2003-04.

Newy was a player we hated to lose (stupid Armstrong) and always wished would return to the Dallas Stars. He was a big reason we won the cup, and deserved the Conn Smythe he received. Toronto is lucky to have him on board,...............wish it were the Stars...........Best of everything, Newy....you deserve it, and they had better appreciate you!

FINALLY!!!! Out of COMPLETE CHAOS comes a glimmer of reason and order.. Not quite a 'hockey savant' but the Maple Schmucks are getting close. Hope Joe doesn't regret this.

Wait... this is confusing. Huh? Good news comes out of Toronto? What? Joe is an upstanding individual - hope he knows what he's getting himself into.

Isn't that the same title George Costanza had with the Yankees? First order of business for Joe will be finding the best calzones in Toronto for Cliff.

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
