TORONTO - Ottawa forward Antoine Vermette and Florida defenceman Jay Bouwmeester were among 15 players who elected to take their teams to salary arbitration, the NHL Players' Association said Saturday.
Joining them were centre Brooks Laich and defenceman Shaone Morrisonn of the Washington Capitals. The only other club to have two players go that route were the Minnesota Wild, who are set to have hearings with forwards Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Stephane Veilleux.
Also on the list: defenceman Dennis Wideman of the Boston Bruins; Carolina forward Chad LaRose; right winger Marek Svatos of the Colorado Avalanche; New York Islanders forward Sean Bergenheim; newly acquired centre Dan Fritsche of the New York Rangers; St. Louis centre Jay McClement; forward Marcel Goc of the San Jose Sharks; Detroit centre Valtteri Filppula; and Nashville defenceman Ville Koistinen.
The deadline for teams to decide to take players to salary arbitration is Sunday. Hearings will be held from July 20-Aug. 4.
For more information on the salary arbitration process, read player agent Rand Simon's blog.

Agree with you Todd - Vermette is a very exciting player with nice skills. Im glad they didnt opt to trade him at the deadline last season (looked like they were thinking about it).
As for Meszaros, he may be trade bait but there is nothing left to trade for! All the good free agent D's are gone and the Sens need defense more than anything else. I think they should hold on to him at this point if they can - pity he is ineligible for arbitration.

Vermette is considered as part of the future of the Sens. With all the crazy over inflated free agent signings, Murray had to go down this road.
The Sens are very lucky nobody had put in a RFA offer sheet. Many teams were "talking about it".
Bottom line, Vermette is only going to get better and I believe a long term deal is already on the table. Just a matter of hammering out a deal which I believe will happen 5 minutes before the actual arbitration hearing.
Kelly, Vermette, Fisher, Healty, Alfreddson, Philips, Volchenkov, and Spezza and Neil are all part of the core of the team for many years.
Now add Brain Lee, Nick Foligno and Cody Bass to the mix as they are the future.
Murray will get the Vermette deal done. Not too sure about Mesjaros...now he's trade bait !

What is Vermette worth? If I were Murray I would want to lock him up long term.
