Buffalo Sabres acquire defenceman Craig Rivet from San Jose Sharks

BUFFALO - The Buffalo Sabres have added some depth to their blue-line.

The NHL team acquired defenceman Craig Rivet and a seventh-round draft pick from the San Jose Sharks on Friday for a pair of second-round choices. "We are very excited to add such a quality veteran player to our roster," Sabres GM Darcy Regier said in a statement. "He is a great character player that will provide our club added leadership and experience."

Rivet spent parts of the last two seasons in San Jose but became expendable after the Sharks signed Rob Blake on Thursday and brought over Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich in a trade from Tampa on Friday.

"Under the cap system, difficult decisions have to be made and this is one of them," said San Jose GM Doug Wilson. "Craig is a true professional and we would like to thank him for everything that he has done here."

The 33-year-old now joins his third NHL team. Rivet had five goals and 35 points in 74 games for the Sharks last season.

In 744 career games with Montreal and San Jose, he has 45 goals and 194 points.

I like this move for Buffalo. Rivet is a very solid player that will bring something every night. If Buffalo adds one more veteran defenseman they will be a threat in the East.

Good move by Regier, and I'm usually the first to blast him. Solid gritty blueliner that can actually play defense and looks like he will take Teppo's leadership spot away, considering the contribution Numinen made last year, little to none, its a big piece of the pie was missing. If he can help the young guys get to be more mature in their decision making on the ice it wil cut down us hearing" he tries to clear the puck, can't get it out, he shoot, he scores"! That happened all to often last year! So we lost Campbell for Bernier and a pick, (Tyler Ennis). Gave up Bernier for a second and third rounder for 2009. gave up the second rounder for '09 and a third rounder in 2010 for Rivet and a seventh rounder. So for Campbell we got Rivet, Ennis, a third rounder and a seventh rounder for next year. If I have that right it wasn't a bad bit of dealing on Darcy's part, that's if I have it right. her's hoping he can do more of the same and more often, especially with the cap hit they won't be taking with Rivet, the guy is quite a talent for the price.

Great trade for the Sabres. Bernier is an underachiever. He showed he can't put the puck in the net on a regular basis and didn't impress Ruff enough to keep him. Plus the trade saves the Sabres money and time in contract negociations with Bernier and any possible free agents. Rivet is sealed for the next 3 years for 3.5 million plus the trade opens up the roster spot for Clarke Macarthur full time. Expect another move by the Sabres....perhaps Bouwmeester in the coming days
