So the 2008-09 New York Rangers; yea or nay?

The Blueshirts have experienced a huge roster upheaval in the past week and though “change is good” seems to be the team motto since the lockout, is it possible GM Glen Sather has tweaked a little too much?

Obviously the two biggest losses to the Rangers’ makeup are Jaromir Jagr and Sean Avery. Jagr was incredible for New York during the playoffs, tallying 15 points in 10 games and always making his ominous offensive presence known. He also lifted young pivot Brandon Dubinsky to new heights.

With Jagr taking a rocket to Russia, the role of right winger who played for Pittsburgh in the 1990s will be filled by ex-Canucks captain Markus Naslund, who hasn’t exactly lit it up in recent years. Now, perhaps Naslund will gel better with one of the team’s two star centers, Chris Drury and Scott Gomez, than Jagr did (hence the Dubinsky ascension), but can we really expect the same point production from the Swede that his Czech counterpart managed?

As for Avery, you could cheekily prognosticate the Rangers will only win a quarter of their games next year, since he’ll be out of the lineup for at least 82 contests. The Blueshirts were always much better with Avery on the ice (33-24-10 with him in the lineup, 9-13-3 without him) and with the league’s most hated player set to throw sand at opponents in Dallas next year, that spark will have to be ignited by someone else.

Newly acquired right winger Nikolai Zherdev inspires a lot of venom, but it’s usually coming from his own coach and GM. Ryan Hollweg will have to go to Russia if he wants to continue his pitched battle with Chris Simon next season, but getting regular ice time amongst a glut of forwards (add Dan Fritsche, Aaron Voros and Patrick Rissmiller to that list) in New York will be his first priority.

On defense, New York jettisoned Christian Backman after an off year, then signed Dmitri Kalinin, who had an even worse year in Buffalo. Fedor Tyutin went to Columbus with Backman, but the Rangers lured Wade Redden over from Ottawa. So if anything, the blueline got more mobile right away and will get even better as Marc Staal and Dan Girardi continue to grow into their NHL roles.

In net, the status quo is a wonderful thing; Henrik Lundqvist returns after his third straight Vezina nomination, while Stephen Valiquette proved last year he could spell the starter for 15 games and not look out of place.

Coming out of the lockout, the Rangers had their Czech philosophy (as in, you can never have too many…) but Jagr, Martin Rucinsky and likely Martin Straka are all gone, while Petr Prucha has been buried on the depth chart.

The ethos then transformed into icing a more North American roster, headlined by the Drury and Gomez signings and bolstered by Brendan Shanahan and Avery, the both of whom are out as well.

So who are these new Rangers? Naslund, Redden, Kalinin and Zherdev all share one painful trait; their old teams didn’t want them. Can Sather prove all four teams wrong? Next season may come down to that question.

Zherdev is the wild card here. There's a reason the Jackets drafted him so high. If the Rangers are smart, they'll pair him with Drury, room him with Drury and ask him to take the kid under his (right) wing. If that doesn't work, buy him out and send him back to Russia.

Losing Avery will hurt. Losing Jagr will hurt much worse. The Rangers don't have a go-to forward. Gomez is now going to draw top pairing defenseman and will struggle to produce 5v5. Naslund is washed up - so is Shanahan. Drury isn't a go-to point producer. Zherdev is lazy. Dubinsky is a good player, but his point were inflated from playing with Jagr. The Rangers are going to play a trap, sit back, and rely on Lundqvist.

First off, letting Avery go was a bigger loss that letting Jagr go, only if Shanahan comes back. Avery was a workhorse, and did whatever he had to for the team. As good a Jagr was, he was not fast, could not carry a game the way he used to, and when it came to talking to the refs and getting some say in the way a game is called, that is Shanny all the way !! Best Off Season Signing = Roscival. Best New signing = Naslund (not redden) but only as a role player, very very good role player. Best new Prospect, Sanguetti Watch Bobby Score more and have a better +/- than Stall this year. But watch Stall be his biggest supporter. There is a TEAM player in Stall and a good combo for years to come. In closing.... MSG Is treading on very thin ice. The NHL is too powerful as a cartel to mess with. But MSG IS RIGHT !! The ALL Powerful and all knowing NHL, has one of the worst Marketing programs in the Major Sports World !! Get some new blood NHL, you are totally missing the boat !!!

Gomez never had more than 55 assists or the mid 80s in points as a devil, the rangers paid this guy a ton of cash for that, i still don't understand why everyone thought he would get 100 plus points. He has never been a big playoff performer ask any devils fan, we were always frustrated in the playoffs when he disappeared. The Rangers will be solid team this year, but the flyers, penguins, devils are better teams than the rangers this year. I predict the rangers finish in 7th and lose in the first round.

As a Canucks fan I'm sorry to see Nazzy go, but it was really time to part ways. Any of you Naslund doubters should think twice, he is going to rip it up in the East playing with either drury or gomez, he is finally in an environment that will allow him to be very offensive which is something that he could not accomplish in Vancouver under Vigneaults system. I predict 30 goals. Also, despite my optimistic outlook on Naslunds performance in the East, the Rangers are NOT going to win the East. I guarantee it. If they even win their division it will be a miracle.

Just some numbers from 07-08 for anyone who thinks the Rangers will miss Jagr's offense next season. Jagr-25 goals, 46 assists...Naslund-25 goals, Zherdev-26 goals, Gomez-54 assists playing without Jagr or any other "scoring" winger on his line.

Glen Sather just gave the Buffalo Sabers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers a shot at next years playoffs. Prediction: New York Rangers finish 2 points behind the New York Islanders, dead last in the Atlantic Division next year . . . . wonder what team he'll ruin next after Glen gets bounced out of Broadway?

Tm Adams...Expecting the Rangers to win the East title? Wow, I would be surprised if they won their division, nevermind the East.

First off, I would have liked to see Brian Rolston instead of Naslund, but we'll see. Second, to Jagr and Avery, thanks for the memories! We're a better team without them. With some young kids coming up the '08/'09 version can be even better with more balanced scoring and more TEAM wins. Give Drury the "C" and bring back Shanahan in a limited role!
