Columbus Blue Jackets sign Kristian Huselius to $19-million, four-year deal

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed Kristian Huselius to a US$19-million, four-year contract.

The 29-year-old winger will earn an average of $4.75 million a season.

"Kristian is a highly skilled player with good vision and hockey sense who has performed at a very high level throughout his career," said GM Scott Howson. "We are very pleased to have a player and a person of his calibre join the Blue Jackets organization."

Huselius had 66 points (25-41) in 81 games with the Calgary Flames last season. He had a career-high 77 points (34-43) in 81 games with Calgary the previous season.

Huselius is the second big signing in two days for the Blue Jackets. The team signed defenceman Mike Commodore to a $18.75-million, five-year deal on Tuesday.

Hey now - I am a Flames fan and yes I have tickets - so I watched Kristian play alot and he was FABULOUS to watch with the puck - he made some beautiful passes. Yes he was streaky as far as goal scoring went but he had 40 assists - so dave - i wouldn't say he is a soon to be hack - especially if you put him beside any Leafs player - sorry and it was more like 60 points - how many of your leafs got to 60? Good Luck Juice - you have GREAT potential and are fun to watch with the puck I hope you find your niche and lose the streaky business.

Panther fan here, who really liked Huselius when he was here. Problem was...Keenan hated him...and actually put him on waivers and then ultimately traded him to Calgary for Montador. Of course, Keenan did much the same with Hagman, trading him to Dallas for a 7th round pick. Both blossom in their new cities as they each matured in the league. What does that say about Keenan...you be the judge. Huselius did put up some good numbers in Calgary...and much of that was playing on top line with Iginla. Still...he earned the top line status. And...the coach, of all people, was Keenan...who basically threw him away while he was with Florida. Good luck in Columbus Kristian. A bit overpaid, but a good pick-up. Light it up against the Flames.

Huselius may continue doing what he's been doing. Guys like Stillman, Prospal & Brunnette have shown they can do their thing in any environment. Huselius could also be this years UFA stinker.

I think Huselius will do all right in Columbus. The price may be a bit high, but it's closer to reality than some other deals this year. As long as Columbus doesn't do something stupid like hire Mike Keenan.

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
