Analysis: Theodore signing comes as big surprise

Now this is a strange one. Cristobal Huet seemed to be a terrific fit for the Washington Capitals and the way Jose Theodore played down the stretch, he looked to be a great fit for the Colorado Avalanche.

Instead, Theodore signed with the Capitals for two years at $9 million and Huet is still left looking for a team.

Up until today, it looked as though a deal for Huet was going to get done. The prevailing wisdom suggested Huet would be signed for three years at $15 million, but obviously something went off the rails.

“We thought it was a good fit and Washington handled the negotiations very professionally,” Huet’s agent Steve Bartlett told thn.com. “I have no jabs against them at all. Sometimes the best-laid plans don’t work out. It fell apart and we just hit a couple of snags we couldn’t get past.”

The Capitals, obviously concerned that losing a goalie of Huet’s ability would derail what looks like a promising team, struck quickly on Theodore, who couldn’t come to terms with the Avalanche, who apparently low-balled the former Hart Trophy winner with an offer in the $3 million-per-year range. Theodore’s camp maintained he was on par with Phoenix's Ilya Bryzgalov, whose cap hit will be $4.25 million each of the next two seasons.

The Avs, meanwhile, filled their goaltending hole by signing Maple Leafs castoff Andrew Raycroft, leaving them with a tandem of Peter Budaj and Raycroft next season.

Ugh.

ROLSTON INTEREST HIGH
Unrestricted free agent Brian Rolston still hadn’t found a home as of 3:15 p.m, Tuesday, but Bartlett described the interest in the former Minnesota Wild forward as “overwhelming.”

“In all my years in the business, I’ve never seen this much interest from this many teams for one of my players before,” Bartlett said.

Posters: Check the numbers - Huet and Theo are very compariable. It makes perfect sense for the Capitals to go with Theo because of the obvious savings in a shorter term contract which will be used to sign key players this year (Laich, Morrison, etc) and retain players in the following years (Backstrom, Semin, etc). As for Headhunter's comment, nice jab at the Washington. Good luck with two unseasoned goalies next year.

terrible move by the caps. although huet has been inconsistent in the playoffs in the past, theodore has been inconsistent in the regular season. theo had a solid season this year, THE FINAL YEAR OF HIS CONTRACT!! also, huet stole the job in montreal from theo so i wouldnt say they are equivalent. $5 mill for 4 yrs for huet is alot better than $4.5 mill for theo. on the bright side, the caps will probably get carey price w/in the next few years when halak beats him out of the job. ;)

I don't thing Theodore can handle the pressure of a big time hockey city - Washington may have made a very wise move.

Great signing by George McPhee. Theo was back on form last season (his save percentage matched Nabokov and Turco) and only untimely illness during the playoffs tarnished that performance. Meanwhile, Huet to Chicago gives them a steady stopper. Colorado, however, now has a major question mark in net...unless the mountain air revives Andrew Raycroft.

I'm happy Raycroft signed somewhere.

This deal has long term cap significance. Huet wanted 5 milliion over 4 years. this Deal will not only save the caps .5 million this year but it allows Valamovto step in thin two yeasr and save the caps a ton of money over the next 5 years. varlamovs contract doesn't start till he plays in north america, which might be this year or next year. This will give them extra money in 2 years to sign Backstrom to a long term deal. A smart Buisness move and a tit for tat hockey move, as Huet and Theodore are very comparable. Mcphee's undertaker mentallity scares me alittle. Lets just hope Theodore stays at the level he has been playing at lately. He has be inconsistant in the past.
