Yes, children, it’s that special day that comes but once a year – the one where NHL player agents rise from their beds having barely slept after visions of no-trade clauses and 10-year contracts danced in their heads all night long.

In other words, it’s unrestricted free agency day, and there should be lots of deals – and perhaps even a few trades mixed in – for hockey fans to dissect and debate.

If the rumor mill is any indication, the one team I’d keep a close eye on is the Chicago Blackhawks. GM Dale Tallon has somewhere in the area of $13 million to spend and I fully expect him to come away with one of the higher-end, puck-moving defensemen (Brian Campbell, Wade Redden, Mark Streit or Michal Rozsival) over the course of the next 24-48 hours.

One of the more intriguing side plots I’ll be watching is the level of interest in two players – Todd Bertuzzi and Ray Emery – whose less-than-ideal reputations precede them in a major way.

If either one of those guys come away with anything other than a one-year contract and a pay cut, there really is no saving NHL owners (and GMs, for that matter) from themselves.

King Penguin..... You sir are goofy... Keep telling yourself how well off your team is... but remember this... they are all first round draft picks because your team was so pitiful.... How pray tell do you keep all those picks when their contracts come due??????? So sayeth me..

Max, to clarify, they will be the most successful team in terms of who they signed during this period. What team wouldn't trade an arm-and-a-leg to lock up Malkin, Staal and Fleury long-term. Not to mention a kid named Sid already under contract. So sayeth King Penguin!

King Penguin, they have a lot more work to do than you think and they still are filled w/ a bunch of young players and I don't think just getting experience in the finals means they are ready to win the Cup.

If that's all they do, they'll be playing a lot of minor leaguers next season. You notice half the team is UFA's?

If Pittsburgh does nothing more than sign Malkin, Staal and Fleury to long-term contracts, they will be the most successful team. So sayeth King Penguin!

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
