THN.com Blog: Where does Ray Emery fit?

Where now, Mr. Emery?

A year ago, Ray Emery had just finished backstopping the Ottawa Senators to the Stanley Cup final and was poised to reign as the team’s No. 1 goalie for the foreseeable future.

Today, Emery is a man without a team – after being bought out and waived by the Sens – and his hockey future is up in the air. Of course, another NHL team will take a chance on him, hoping Emery has learned and matured after a 2007-08 season that was a gong show of off-ice stumbles.

After wrist surgery sidelined him for the start of the year, he did little besides distract once he returned to the ice – missing team meetings, showing up late for practice, fighting teammates in practice and exhibiting a generally lackluster attitude.

By season’s end, Emery had played a big part in the downfall of the Sens in the second half and in costing coach John Paddock his job. Ultimately, Ottawa management decided to wash its hands of the goalie.

It was a forgettable year for Emery, but he’s only 25 and has the talent and physical ability to be an NHL starter.

The only question is, where?

Here are nine teams, in alphabetical order, where Emery might fit:

Chicago –
Nikolai Khabibulin can become an unrestricted free agent next summer and the up-and-coming Hawks will be looking for a goalie who can grow and develop with its young, talented team.

Colorado – If the Avs don’t re-sign Jose Theodore, they’ll be desperate for a No. 1.

Columbus –
Pascal Leclaire had a breakout season (finally) and Fredrik Norrena has been solid in a support role, but neither are sure things. The Jackets might want some insurance. (I know what you’re thinking: “Ray Emery? Insurance? Not even close…”)

Related Links

Detroit – Dominik Hasek has retired and Chris Osgood is 35. Plus, nobody’s better at reclamation projects than the Wings.

Los Angeles – The Kings have been looking for stability in goal since Kelly Hrudey left in the late ’90s. (I know what you’re thinking: “Ray Emery? Stability? Not even close…”)

Nashville – Right now, the Preds are going with Dan Ellis and Pekka Rinne.

New Jersey – OK, Emery’s not going to beat out Martin Brodeur. But maybe a couple years of backing up the best will help him refocus, and then he can take over when Brodeur eventually retires. And if it doesn’t work out, it should provide a few juicy Ray Emery vs. Lou Lamoriello incidents.

Phoenix – Ilya Bryzgalov was great after the Coyotes picked him up on waivers this season; why not try again with Emery?

Tampa Bay – The Bolts have been a mess in net since winning the Cup – and then losing Khabibulin to free agency – in 2004.

Emery would be a perfect fit for chicago with one goalie being unreliabel and the other a free agent

Where would emery fit in? He'd fit right in at a rehab center. Till the party boy decides he cant half-a-ss it in the NHL,No team will want him. A ONE year deal would work for him IF some crazed/dumb gm takes a chance on him. IF any GM offers him more than one season...expect the same results. Practicing with something white on his nose and a beer in his hand. All hung-over.

He is not coachable right now. He has a problem. No team in their right mind should touch him.

Whoever it was that said you could see Emery playing for the L.A. Kings, you must be doing the same stuff he is, was or thought about. Great glove, can't move side to side, can't skate, and like so many other goaltenders of today, couldn't explain a two pad stack if they seen one in slo-motion.

His main problem is cocaine, same with Spezza and Redden. Ottawa cops raided a party with them there, doing the big C

Hey Eli, first off I'm half chinese and a quarter east indian, so I'm well aware of how things work for non whites, but only schmucks complain about things they can't control. People are nervous of Avery because he is nuts, and even Detroit wasn't able to keep him in line. McCarty was always good to his team mates (never hitting them for one thing) and he actually ahd to work his way back to the NHL from the ECHL, and prove he had moved on. Fleury rode himself out of the League, and by the by, is First Nations, not white which shoots down your whole point. Probert had Gretzky and Messier pulling for him, so clearly fracturing a dressing room was never his problem. I'm nt saying there isn't racism, but if you think Emery is the victim of prejudice your a twit, the only thing teams don't like about him is that he's a selfish jack***.

For the love! Can we leave race out of this please? Emery tore a successful team a part with his "me first" attitude. Skipping meetings, wearing brand new equipment to games, getting in fights with teammates; this started before last year, too. Leave race out of it and realize that he is a terrbiel teammate hence, bad for the locker room. Point fingers at Probert, Avery, McCarty, Fleury, etc. - these guys produced for their respective teams. I know, I know, Emery got his team to the Cup in 06-07 which is completely valid. But he has just 134 career games under his belt and coming into the 07-08 he had plenty to prove yet. Well, look what he proved. Other players love(d) playing with Probert, Avery, McCarty and Fleury because while they may be trouble at times, they were about the team. They fought for the good of the other 18 guys in the same color jersey. Emery fought with the guys in the same color jersey. Wow, I guess this is a color issue.

Albert - I disagree. I think Detroit should try to sign Emery, Ed Belfour, and Alexei Yashin.

Eli you put one too many names on that list and it invalidated your point. If it were truly the whites against non-whites Fleury would not be on that list either. Ottawa bent over backwards for that young man, and it was his behaviour not his race that did him in. He is a very talented goaltender, and he will be signed somewhere, and if he blows that there is always the KHL
