THN.com Blog: Healy hiring could backfire on NHLPA

Whenever something positive can be seen in the NHL Players’ Association, there always seems to be at least a bit of worrisome news about the union that accompanies it.

That much was true Tuesday, when, in the midst of a players’ meeting in Colorado, the union announced the hiring of Glenn Healy as their new director of player affairs (a curious title, given the history of some members’ marital adventures).

Now, the good news for the NHLPA is, under executive director Paul Kelly, the organization is receiving the most honest and balanced leadership in its often-turbulent existence.

If my colleague Ken Campbell’s suggestion is correct and commissioner Gary Bettman and the NHL are aiming to abolish guaranteed contracts as part of the next collective bargaining agreement, they’ll quickly discover Kelly isn’t anywhere close to the pushover his predecessor Ted Saskin was, nor does he employ the bull-in-a-china-shop public relations philosophy that helped do in Saskin’s predecessor Bob Goodenow.

Bettman and the owners will surely and rightfully be painted as villains under such a scenario – and I suspect the majority of the general public will see matters as Kelly and the players see them.

That, in and of itself, would be no small victory for the union.

Nevertheless, the hiring of Healy – someone who, despite what his friends within the industry might tell him, rubs a fair number of folks the wrong way – appears to signal a more militant turn within the NHLPA that could be cause for concern among hockey fans.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m all for NHLers, who have an extremely limited window in which to capitalize on decades of hard work and dedication, defending themselves vigorously against some of the big-time money-grubbers who own teams.

However, when you bring aboard a guy like Healy, who still believes Goodenow’s every utterance should be carved on stone slabs and displayed at the Smithsonian Institution, you run the risk of setting up a needless showdown that could be more about massive egos clashing – which many now believe was at the root of the ’04-05 lockout – than the good of the game.

I mean, can you imagine Healy at the same negotiating table as ownership hawks like Ed Snider and Jeremy Jacobs? Something tells me a new CBA would not be arrived at quickly if matters were left to that trio.

Besides, if Healy’s showdowns with Brian Burke on TSN during the lockout were any indication, debating isn’t exactly his strong point.

Thank God he's gone (although it does show you how stupid the NHLPA is to hire such a waste of air)! Now, if we could only get rid of Bob Cole (you know, the guy who couldn't remember who the two goalies in the final were -- kept saying "And the goalie makes a great save..."?) and Greg Millen and Bob McKenzie (yes and Doug too) and McGuire (he changes the volume of his voice because he's trying to establish himself on NBC and that's the way, uh huh, they like it, Mr. William) and especially Don Cherry. It was so bad during the finals that I just tuned in RDSHD -- the commentary was better in French and the HD picture is way superior too. Even though I only know "hockey French", subtracting all the negatives of the English language coverage was like adding a big positive.

Healy is arrogant,negative,ego-maniac.Great NHLPA material.Prepare for a long lockout next time.He was a terrible commentator, never anything good to say about anybody. He talks as if he's actually accomplished something in his pathetic career as a backup goalie. How many games did you play in the 94 final Heals???

Very interesting hire. I have to agree with Pat that it will be good to not have to listen to Healy on TV anymore though. I enjoy hearing an opinion but Healy's opinions are always negative. At least give the players credit for playing good every once in a while. I find it especially annoying when he criticizes goalies for letting in a weak goal considering he wasn't a very good goalie himself. I can't stand listening to Pierre McGuire (why must he always CHANGE the volume of HIS VOICE?) but at least his comments have a good balance of positive and negative remarks.

I never liked Healy - he is cocky, and over-opinionated considering how little he ever accomplished himself. I think this is a dumb hiring for the PA, but I sure appreciate them getting this fool off tsn so I don't have to listen to his ridiculous comments anymore. What do you think the chances are of the PA hiring Pierre Mcguire too?

Like Pat, I was just happy to see Healy off TV. Unlike Pat, next on my wishlist of union hires is Greg Millen, not McGuire. Then Mark Lee. Then Harry Neale. Healy did seem to be in love with Bob Goodenow though, as Adam points out. That's probably not a good thing for NHL/NHLPA relations. On the other hand, it might be worth another lockout just so I don't have to see or hear this jerk on TV anymore.

I wish more people in hockey were like Glenn Healy and actaully had opinions and weren't afraid to voice them. Healy may rub you the wrong way but you know where he stands and I respect him for it. I'd rather have an honest jerk then a lying yes man.
