DETROIT - Unable to score in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final, the Pittsburgh Penguins have shifted gears and will now go with the Big Bang Theory.

Georges Laraque is out and veteran Gary Roberts is in.

Roberts’ best before date has long since passed, but he is still capable of dishing out big hits and that, more than anything else, is why he’ll play in Game 2 after being a healthy scratch in the series opener.

Asked what he can bring to the table at this stage of his career, the 42-year-old left winger said: “I’m not about to start changing the way that I play at this stage of my career. They are a quick, skilled team and they are hard to hit, but we still have to go out and try to hit them.”

Roberts, who had seasons of 53 and 41 goals earlier in his career, will ultimately bow out as a fourth-liner, but that doesn’t mean he can’t make an impact. The Penguins were decidedly passive in the first game.

Laraque, their tough guy, simply doesn’t skate well enough for the Penguins to afford to have him in the lineup. If he gets back in at this stage, it will only be because he is one of coach Michel Therrien’s favorite players.

I have watched Roberts play hockey and lacrosse since he was 16 years old, and I have not seen many more intense or dedicated players. So it was really no surprise that I heard he blew up when he found out he’d be sitting out Game 1. That game had barely ended when whispers of Roberts being inserted into the lineup for Game 2 began.

Averaging just less than 10 minutes of ice time a game and having scored two goals (both in Game 1 against Ottawa in the first round), Roberts won’t make Detroit defensemen lose sleep over having to cover him. Now chasing a loose puck into the corner with Roberts on their tail just may cause them to toss and turn through the night.

Roberts is expected to play left wing on the Penguins’ fourth line with Adam Hall at center and Jarkko Ruutu on right wing. The Penguins’ other lines are expected to be: 1. Sidney Crosby between Ryan Malone and Marian Hossa; 2. Evgeni Malkin between Maxime Talbot and Petr Sykora and 3. Jordan Staal between Pascal Dupuis and Tyler Kennedy.

Roberts knows his best asset is his fearlessness and he’ll ram hard into any player who elects to carry the puck. Don’t say we didn’t warn you, Nicklas Lidstrom.

* You have to hand it to Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury. After falling flat on his face as he raced out to the ice to start Game 1, Fleury might have wanted to dig a deep hole and bury himself in it. Instead, the recreated the scene when he ventured onto the ice for the start of practice Sunday. It was quite humorous, really.

* Don’t be surprised if Detroit winger Johan Franzen is inserted back into the lineup sooner rather than later. He practiced hard yesterday and looked good. Some have suggested Red Wings coach Mike Babcock is superstitious and might be inclined to stick with his same lineup as long as it is winning, but that would be silly. If Franzen, who has 12 goals in 11 games, can play, then he should play.

* The team that wins Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final has won the Cup 53 of 68 seasons. The last time a team lost Game 1 and then rebounded to win the Cup was 2004 when the Tampa Bay Lightning turned the trick.

The media did a good job of talking him up as this grizzled veteran, giving him just enough spotlight for everyone to see him land that sucker punch. "Hey guys, follow my lead and punch guys in the face, that'll get us back in the series." And to go as far as to say that Franzen shouldn't be playing in the league if he falls after being punched in the face like that?

Well... I guess if you were looking for Roberts to make in impact on the game you got what you asked for. However it was in the form of bringing the game to a new low with brutal cheap shots. He wasn't even man enought to attempt to check someone, instead he takes a sucker punch out of the play at a person with a back turned toward him. He should be embarrased and so should you. But my guess is that neither of you will lose any sleep over it. How sad.

Well, it's the wings with two shutouts in a row. Roberts big contribution as a couple of nice hits and cheapshot sucker punch from behind to Franzhen. Class Act move on a guy that just got back from a concussion. Roberts must have been watching Bertuzzi career highlights while he was out nursing his cold, I mean pneumonia. Sid the Kid was awesome, so was Malakov. Two no shows at last nights game. I'm surprised at what a lack of effort the Pens are showing. They played tough against the Flyers but, I think that must have drained them. Cleary, experience and age are favoring the Wings thus far.

Gary will provide a lift in unseen ways to boalster this team back into competative action. This is a guy that commands so much respect with his stare that at points he doesn't even have to open his mouth. He could very well get players like Crosby and Malkin back into the saddle. And he will certainly lead by example despite being on a 4th line. His limited ice time is perfect for him to come out and play exactly how he does play without having to worry about conservation of energy to himself. This also increases the availability for the Pens to role 4 lines giving the other lines seconds on the minute for rest. One of two possiblities are at hand here. The Pens picking it up as I've stated could be the case; or countinuation of their being a deer caught in the headlights with Franzen back in the lineup for the Wings, rolling 4 lines or in your face speed, experence, and composure hockey. If the latter happens, don't be surprised to see Crosby loose his mind during game 2; even more so at home.

Hopefully Gary's contribution will be to make this an interesting series.

Gary Roberts is a balls-to-the-wall Leader who will help the Pens know what it takes, it may not be enough, but it will help. He should have never sat out the first game!

Gary Roberts isnt going to help one bit. The NHL got the match up they wanted with what they thought was all the young talent. The new NHL would love to see the face of the sport heist the cup at a younger age then any other captain but the wings will spoil those plans. Brenda

If Gary Roberts is so important to the Pens he would`ve been playing in the earlier rounds. I agree that Franzen will help the Wings before Roberts will help the Pens.

Inserting Gary Roberts or any player in as a 4th liner isn't going to make that much of a difference. If at this stage, a team still needs inspiration from watching another player- then they're in the wrong game. They just be accountable for their own actions on the ice. I can see the line juggling being much more impactful because of line match-ups than this stunt. Detroit's insertion of Franzen into the second line is much more of an impact move than Roberts' move into the line-up. But then after the last two hideous periods of play by the Pens (how many shots on net?), I guess one has to try juggling something. But if they still lose, Therrien can only go to the well so many times to juggling the lines before that runs dry and it does look like desperation & panic.
