THN.com Playoff Blog: Where’s my Stanley Cup funfest?

People, are you amped yet?

Are you ready for a showdown as scintillating as one can get before an actual puck has been dropped?

Yeah, me too. But there’s one little thing that would really have put this year’s Stanley Cup final over the top for me.

A party.

Or at least some sort of media blowout. I don’t even have to be invited; I just want it to happen. Could be in Detroit, where the series starts, could be in Pittsburgh, home of the first team to clinch a spot in the final, could be in New York where they have all sorts of reporting-type folks and the NHL’s head office, to boot.

Now, I know the anti-fun militia won’t like this, but let’s take a cue from the most successful sport in North America – NFL football – and schedule some sort of pre-final Stanley Cup extravaganza. In the days leading up to the Super Bowl, you can’t turn around without hearing about some sort of event hyping up what usually turns out to be a mediocre game (and in Canada, we don’t even get to see the good commercials).

Let’s have a fanfest. Bands will play, the Cup will be there, Mark Messier will sign autographs and give out bags of potato chips – it’ll be fun. This year, an event in Detroit could have featured Kid Rock and Bob Probert. Pittsburgh could counter with Mario Lemieux and a reunion of his buddies from the 1991 and ’92 Cup teams. Bring the kids, we’ll party until at least 9:30.

In the four days since the Red Wings iced Dallas, the anticipation of the final series has been palpable, but not frothing. And we need frothing.

Some folks have been kicking up a fuss that the final didn’t start sooner. Others point out having the first three games scheduled for the same nights as the Detroit Pistons-Boston Celtics playoff series was moronic. Now, I’m OK with the teams having a rest before the ultimate showdown, but there’s no reason something couldn’t have been planned for one of those days.

Sure, the NHL didn’t know exactly when the conference finals would end, but the league would have had an approximate idea and again, if you throw your funfest in New York, it doesn’t matter who makes it to the final.

On top of that, hockey players are the most accommodating athletes in any major sport. While some may think showing up in the parking lot of Mellon Arena for an afternoon could wreck a player’s mojo before the final countdown, it’s really not that dire: Top players from both teams have been readily available for interviews this week and no one’s been spooked like a racehorse when it came to our requests.

The NHL’s slowly building some steam this year. The stars are in the final, both teams come from strong hockey traditions and even ESPN’s Bill Simmons said he was loving the playoffs.

Time to capitalize on the momentum and make sure the Stanley Cup stays in the public eye as much as possible before the puck drops.

It’s fun, people. Get into it.

Is there anyway to get Bettman impeached by us fans? He's a major tool that shouldnt be running anything more complicated than a lawnmower! Much less be in charge of the best sport in the world! I'm admittedly a Wings fan but would it be so bad if we replaced him with Scotty Bowman, Ray Bourke, Stevei Y, Don Cherry? Im serious folks, can anyone do worse? Half of the play-offs arent even available to people who dont subscribe to cable! PLEASE HELP REPLACE BETTMAN!

To Steve Austin: Granted that Bettman may isn't the Pete Rozelle of hockey, but (and I don't know your age or how far back you go in terms of following the NHL) he's a quantum leap of over John Ziegler. This joker would go into hiding whenever the NHL had a crisis or fine a player for writing an article for the print version of this journal that criticized the officiating (See Trottier, Bryan). Ziegler did for the NHL what the navigations officer did for the Titanic.

Excellent idea, perhaps you could do the Fun Fest in the week approaching the first game, continue it for the first four games in the repective cities in this case Detroit and then Pittsburgh. Pack up the Cup and the rest of the trophies from the Hockey Hall of Fame, march out some of the superstars of past it would be great. What a visionary idea....., just make it happen Gary!

I definetly agree that the NHL needs to capitalize on the Finals as much as can be. First off, its a capitalist country in the US and one of the 4 major sports (NASCAR really isn't a sport of anything more than engineering and drivers with more skill obtained through a lack of intelligence to the degree of human nature's danger acessment not even regestering). I've been waiting for years for some sort of victory for the NHL on a fan connection level. Plus they need to make up for Seal performing at the All-Star game. Fact of the matter is the sport is too Americanized these days compared to the good old Redwings / Avs days of the mid 90's. Too much explotation and advertisments, plus promotions for me to handle much longer. The Crosby hipe isn't taking fly compared to say LaBrone James or how ever its spelled; and we all have faith in a group of people that decided the Spiderman movie advertisers could promote the NHL after the lockout. Point is, the same people running the NHL think and do business very closely to the same people that run the Maple Leafs organization. Its the same situation. We all mostly love the Leafs organization and the NHL; we just hate the people making the calls behind logo's on both sides. I've never known anyone else other than Gary Betman in my lifetime calling the shots in the NHL. But I believe its time for a change. Lets also not forget the countless failing market teams that had so much ambition; not to forget the squandered talent and excellerated devolopment of these teams at the expense of all our other teams. The league looks yellow across the board, not green. For once in the last decade I'd rather focus on the teams, players, organizations, and the game instead of trying to figure out new rules, contracts, extreme roster changes (every year now I have to take a part-time job of re-learning where players currently are), and weather or not the game is stable compared to other sports markets. Not to mention the fact of connection with the fans. But lets fact it. These days any hipe built up to the Finals would involve Mark Messier promoting ColdFX, Crosby with Rebox, and the NHL trying to scramble for advertisments to keep such event afloat.
