Defenceman Chris Chelios out for Red Wings with leg injury

DALLAS - Detroit Red Wings defenceman Chris Chelios missed Game 6 of the Western Conference finals against the Dallas Stars on Monday night because of a lingering leg injury.

"Chelios' leg wasn't doing very good," coach Mike Babcock said at the team's morning skate.

Babcock said then that Chelios, scoreless in 14 playoff games, would be a game-time decision.

The 46-year-old Chelios just completed his 24th NHL regular season. He has played in an NHL-record 260 playoff games.

Hmmm... Detroit finally finishes off Dallas and Chelios isn't in the lineup? Hint Hint. By all means, if Babcock wants a gaping hole on defense, keep Chelios in the lineup! And who would be around to whine and complain about every call if Chelios wasn't there?

I could be wrong about what I am about to say, but it wouldn't be the first time. I think Chelios didn't play in game six against the Stars because of how badly he played in game five. He was in the process of going to the bench when Dallas scored the winning goal. Brett Lebda, his partner, was left on his own to defend two Stars skaters. Clearly, it was a titantic brain cramp on Chelios's part. When a team is trying to qualify for the finals of the Stanley Cup, it needs its veteran leaders to play smarter than that.

Come on Chris! Heal quickly! I want to see you out on the ice against Crosby! Two of the NHLs biggest stars.
