Stars' Turco 0-9-2 versus Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena

DETROIT - Marty Turco has quite an opportunity in front of him.

The Dallas goalie is 0-9-2 in the NHL at Joe Louis Arena, where he will have a chance to stop nagging questions and extend the Western Conference final against the Detroit Red Wings. "It's nothing short of an exciting challenge for all of us, and for me personally," the former University of Michigan star said after helping the Stars stave off elimination.

Stars forward Steve Ott said the stage will be set perfectly for Turco on Saturday in Game 5.

"He wants that win probably more than anybody," Ott said. "A win there would be huge for his confidence and the team's."

The Stars are in much better spirits and like their chances at pulling off a rare comeback in the Stanley Cup playoffs after beating Detroit 3-1 Wednesday night.

"Our guys feel very good today," Dallas coach Dave Tippett said. "You get up this morning, you're still alive."

The odds are stacked against the Stars feeling that way many more days.

Just two NHL teams have advanced after trailing a series 3-0. The last was the New York Islanders 33 years ago - 33 years after the Toronto Maple Leafs did it.

But Ott is thankful to still have a shot.

"Summer could have started today and we would have been all pretty miserable having meetings," Ott said. "We're alive and we feel good. We feel confident going into Detroit."

The Red Wings will be without NHL playoff goal-scoring leader Johan Franzen, who will miss his fourth straight game because of concussion-like symptoms. Franzen has been cleared for light workouts, but doesn't seem to be on the verge of returning to the lineup to add to his franchise-record 12 goals.

"He's going to have to practice with us for a few days and feel good the next day before he plays again," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said.

The Red Wings lost for the first time in nearly a month in Game 4, ending a franchise-record nine-game playoff winning streak.

Henrik Zetterberg chose to take a glass half-full view of the way the series has gone.

"We got one out of two in Dallas, we're happy about that," Zetterberg said.

Captain Nicklas Lidstrom said the Red Wings can't rely too much on playing at home because the Stars are going to play with nothing-to-lose intensity.

"They are going to come out with the same desperation they did last night, and that's something we have to match," Lidstrom said when the team arrived back home Thursday. "We have to match their intensity. We have to try to stay out of the box too."

The Stars went ahead for good on a power play in Game 4 when Mike Modano scored on a one-timer early in the third period.

"Mike's a big-time player," Ott said. "Doesn't matter if he's getting a little bit older in his age, he still knows when to step up his game.

"For him to step up with a huge power-play goal, wasn't a better time to do it."

Loui Eriksson's disputed goal was timely, too, for the Stars.

It gave them their first lead 219-plus minutes into the series even though Eriksson was clearly in the crease.

"Once we got that first goal on them, the bench lit up like it did in the first two series," Ott said. "We hadn't really seen that in any of the first three games. The excitement was there.

"It's hard to explain, but the feeling we had against San Jose and Anaheim was definitely there against Detroit."

Eriksson's goal came about 12 minutes after Pavel Datsyuk's apparent score was waved off because the officials determined Tomas Holmstrom interfered with Turco.

"I've seen it on TV and I'm clearly outside," Holmstrom said. "It was a bad call."

Teammate Darren McCarty agreed, but added it's time for the NHL's top-seeded team to move on.

"There's always adversity in the playoffs you have to face," McCarty said. "We'll have to find a way to bounce back from this."

Mary, That would be you, the second Mary ...... Your talking points are a bit out-of-date, and incorrect. Yes, the central has been historically lesser teams. Yes, that has helped Detroit's record. Are you suggesting that Dallas has not historically benefited from the likes of Phoenix, LA, San Jose, or Anaheim? Well, I guess technically you could dispute given this is really the Stars' best post season performance this decade??? Still, this year Detroit has had a very sub-par regular season performance in the Central, yet still President's trophy again. That said, regular season defines the seeding in the playoffs. With Dallas being the 5th seed and in the conf final - well, wouldn't your own case suggest that seeding is not always indicative of playoff success? Also, before you slam Nashville too hard, remember they were able to actually WIN their first two home games against Detroit. Dallas, not quite so much!

Mary, That would be you, the other Mary............ it's pretty amazing to me how you can say that Detroit EARNED all the wins they had this season (or in prior seasons come to think of it) considering the division they play in and the bottom dwellers they play against 8 times each season. The only thing that could make it any easier for them to win games would be if the NHL traded out Nashville for LA! Yeah, Detroit EARNS every one of thier wins all right. Here's hoping the teams that showed up to play on Wednesday show up again on Saturday!!

Any woman that can talk hockey like Cyndi... yeesh... will you marry me ? What a woman !! Mary, Cyndi's point is that while Wings fans gloss over the bad calls that Stars endure during this series and last, they expect to be given every benefit of the doubt against the Stars. Jus tlike I said, its just like the whining crybaby Cowboy fans of the 90s. "We're too good to have that call go against us"... I hated it then and hate it now coming from those few whiners in the Wings fanbase. I repeat, Cyndi, see my first sentence..... Joe, sad to say, we gave it all we had those first 3 games. The Terrible Red machine is just that much better than all their piers, including the Penguins in the next round.

I don't believe the Wings, or their fans, expect anything to be given to them. But they do expect the other team to show up and give them a run for their money, since that's exactly what has happened to Detroit the last 4 or 5 years. Detroit, just like any other team trying to be a champion, has to suffer through painful losses to appreciate what it takes to win when it counts. Nothing is for certain and there is no guarantee what will happen on Saturday or beyond. But the point is that Dallas has finally decided to make a game of it, and that is what everyone has wanted since this series began.

Cyndi, you got it wrong. The Red Wings don't expect anybody to hand them anything...they earned all the wins they had this season and will be adding one more on Saturday....

Steve Ott is a pretty decent player. I've seen him make some fine assists to Modano in the past and if he wants to be an agitator then so be it. Every team needs energy guys like him and he's a valued guy to Dallas. All your comments about Ott are just jibberish. Dallas has their swagger back so dont count your chickens before they hatch Detroit. Marty is overdue and the Stars are too. Saturday could be very ugly for the Wings.

Well said Terry. I'm getting a little tired of all the wing fans puffing out their chests before they have accomplished the final result. The Wings are a very talented group, but so were San Jose, Montreal, Minnesota and Colorado(before their injuries). I think, in reality, the Wings were slated to win it all the last two years. We all know how that turned out. So, Wings fans, be proud of your team but leave the gloating until you can finally prove you're the best. Pittsburgh may have something to say about the final result.

Well said, Ken. Red Wings fans do seem to be somewhat presumptuous, counting their chickens before they're hatched. That mindset backfired on them in game four and it could happen again on Saturday and beyond. I hope so. Its one thing to be confident, quite another thing to make comments you can't back up. Its fine to brag on your team but the Wings haven't won the cup just yet so save some of that hot air for when they do, or better yet, if they do.

I applaud the Dallas Stars for having pride, playing a good game and not rolling over in game 4 like the Avalanche did in their game 4. It would seem that is what Detroit or their fans thought should happen. I'm not sure why they feel they are entitled to that but that is the feeling I get. Is it just because you are Detroit, and you are up 3-0 that automatically justifies you a sweep? I don't have ideas of grandeur that we will win 4 in a row against the Redwings. I do feel however, that the Redwings need to win it and not expect teams to just give it to them. As for the Holmstrom disallow, yeah it was a bad call. Just like the one they gave him in game 1 was a bad call. Move on, we did. At the end of the day or week the best team will eventually win, that is why they play a series instead of just one game. As to the goal that was allowed, Erickson was not in the crease. It happened right in front of me. There are pictures showing where he was. Here's the a point to this however that nobody seems to want to mention. That puck originally bounced off of Osgood and went to the right of him, and was going in the net, how would Loui being in the crease on the left side have caused him goalie interference. Osgood made the original save, couldn't control the rebound and never even made a move to save it from going in. He was frozen. Watch the replay, look at the pictures. May the best team that shows up on Saturday win.

Chuck, if your comment made sense it would help other readers. Ott was talking about Turco. Ott knows his role and the whole world knows he's no top talent. He's also someone every team wants a couple of. I guess you've never seen McCarty lay on someone to keep them from re-entering the play? Sheesh, what selective vision. And what a profound whiner. Yeah, my Stars are probably history on Saturday. The Wings deserve it, and need to win in front of their own fans. Our guys went as far as they should. Aint no shame being felt in Dallas though, I can assure you !
