For me and a few other people I’ve spoken with who work in the hockey business, the true test of the 2007-08 Detroit Red Wings was never really going to begin until the Western Conference final did.

Well, we just finished Game 3 of the third-round series between Detroit and Dallas, and while you may not have to hand it to the Wings, I certainly do.

Their 5-2 defeat of the Stars Monday left no more illusions as to which team deserves a shot at the equally imposing Pittsburgh Penguins for this season’s NHL championship, and which team will be contacting the moving van companies with a firm vacating date in hand.

The Stars had as strong a start to a game in Game 3 as they’ve had all series, but still found themselves with the first deficit of the evening after a brilliant backhander from Pavel Datsyuk opened the scoring at 9:27 of the first period.

The American Airlines Arena crowd erupted when the Stars’ Nicklas Grossman tied the score less than six minutes later, but just 37 seconds after Grossman’s goal, Datsyuk potted a second highlight-reel gem to regain the lead for Detroit.

The reality was, the Stars had played arguably their best period of series, yet still trailed a Wings squad that made Dallas’ three first-frame power play opportunities into a number of 2-on-1 rushes in Detroit’s favor.

And that power play inefficiency continued to haunt Dallas after the teams traded second period goals to make it 3-2 for the visitors after 40 minutes of play.

With Detroit’s Tomas Holmstrom in the penalty box for a goalie interference penalty (I’m as shocked as you are) to give the Stars their fifth man advantage of the game early in the third period, Henrik Zetterberg streaked down the ice to score an absolutely magnificent shorthanded goal at the 1:28 mark that effectively handed Dallas their golfing papers.

Dallas couldn’t score on any of the six power plays it was the beneficiary of Monday and also lobbed just 18 total shots at Detroit goalie Chris Osgood for the second straight game.

But I’m starting to believe the Stars’ failings are not entirely of their own doing.

It’s time to face facts: the Wing’s the Thing.

To the confederacy of dunces who have been using my name on the lower blogs (and I'm sure that it's been more than one as it probably requires three of you mental defective Red Wing fans to at least spell my name correctly): I only followed women's soccer long enough to watch Brandi Chastain do her famous thing a few years ago, which was certainly preferable to watching the "Blue Paint Special" (you know, number 96) attempt to elevate goaltender interference into an art. If the man with the yellow hat is around I wish that he would monitor the internet usage of the primates in his care. I'll look for you jokers the next time the Wings win the cup (not this year) when the evening news shows images of you uncivilized Cro-Magnons trashing your city. Happy burning and looting!

Jim, the fact that you're making fun of spelling mistakes that some guys are making should tell you you're beat. Also, if you're going to toot that horn all day you might want to check if this "Mike Ilich" you keep referring to could possibly be related to Wings owner Mike Ilitch. And Melissa, keep generalizing, please. Of course a large percentage of the fan base are just Wings fans and not hockey fans. The same goes for any major city. I consider Dallas a hockey town but you're kidding yourself if it's not "COWBOYS AND COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!" until December. Every team has it's "in-season fans", and every team has it's hardcore fans. I know many people in the area who are "hockey fans" and I could go up to at any point of the year and strike up a conversation. I'm sure you have that too in Texas. It's just ridiculous for you to assume that "all" fans are done when the Wings are, because clearly, you know all of them. Anyway, the Wings do have arrogant fans, just as any other team would if they had the same success. But let's not confuse that with pride. The fact is, Detroit has developed a reputation of being a great regular season team with little playoff success (relative to the President's Trophy's they've won in the past 9 years), so it's easy for the media to overlook them. Everyone knows they have a good team, but it's boring to say they'll win the Cup every year, so this year most of the media turned to Anaheim, San Jose, Pittsburgh, whatever -- you didn't see many picking Detroit, and that's frustrating to fans who see the team win 50 games a year. So watching this team roll through the playoffs that they are is a great thing. It's something to be proud of. The team has stopped coasting through regular seasons, leading to lazy habits that will knock them out of the playoffs early. They're finally making deep playoff runs, so what if the fans take pride in that?

Pizza is good... not as good as hockey.... and not as good as Red Wings Hockey. I love the Red Wings and all their fans. I'm a bonehead. Thank you to all the Wings fans that allow me to walk away from this thread and keep some dignity...

Gary...IF Detroit advances...I'll do something before the Cup final begins. I might even invite someone from Pittsburgh on the show. If I can find a good Pens blogger. I'm sure one is out there somewhere.
