As a traditional-minded hockey fan, it always makes me happy to see the physical aspect of the game alive and well and that it can still be the difference between winning and losing.

A worry of mine coming out of the lockout was, while a display of skilled, nifty hockey is great, it would trump over any big banging team that would be held prisoner to more rigid penalty calls.

But this Philadelphia-Montreal series proves smart, physical play is still mandatory.

The most memorable, morale-boosting (for both players and fans) theme for Montreal in Round 1 was Mike Komisarek’s ongoing battle with Milan Lucic. The big Bruins rookie was an effective player for Boston - and scored two big goals – but was held back from doing more damage by Komisarek’s constant attention.

But against Philadelphia, Komisarek hasn’t continued that type of battle with anyone and as a result, big R.J. Umberger is taking advantage by scoring six goals in four games.

At the other end, the Flyers boast three defensemen who make you think twice about going into the corner or heading to the front of the net. Derian Hatcher, Jason Smith and Braydon Coburn are nullifying the shifty, but shy Canadiens attack.

And when the Canadiens did have someone in front of the net, what happened? They scored, twice, in less than a minute. They obviously have to start doing this more in Game 5.

The first goal, Tomas Plekanec planted himself right in front of Martin Biron and tipped home Josh Gorges’ shot. Right after that Saku Koivu had a gift presented to him after a point shot hit a forward in front and bounced right to the captain.

The Flyers’ big defensemen are giving the Canadiens forwards a reason to not want to stand in front or battle in the corner, but if Montreal is to come back, the Habs have to continue to get dirty and Komisarek has to start being mean again.

SMART HOCKEY
Say what you will about Steve Begin’s penalty, this is exactly why we play a seven game series.

It’s a shame the very type of game Montreal has to play to win the series came back to bite them at the end of this important contest, but that hit was as much interference as Mike Richards’ shoulder check late in Game 1 was a knee.

Begin caught Sami Kapanen admiring his pass, but at that junction in the game, as a player, you have to be aware of the difference between smart and not smart physical play.

The check will be debated all day, I’m sure, on whether or not it was late, but the tie-breaker for the referee is that the door to the bench was open. If it’s closed, I say it’s a clean check, but with it open, that already borderline late hit is now also, irresponsibly, putting someone’s well being at an unnecessary risk.

This series has been a battle and the bickering and name-calling (please, don't blame this one on what was a solid game of officiating) will surely continue in the fan world, but the better all-around team is certainly winning this series: Montreal has yet to hold a lead in regulation.

I'm sick of hearing about the kneeing call that wasn't. Richards stuck out his knee? Yeah, that's why he lead with his shoulder. Kovalev knees Umberger and doesn't get called for it and that's ok right? Of course because Umberger is owning the Canadiens in the series so far. Are the Flyers getting outshot, yes. But they are also getting good scoring chances from most of there shots. Any team can shoot the puck from all angles, but getting rebound and screens would probably help also. Aside from Komisarek I don't know if there is a person on the Canadiens that would sacrifice his body to block a shot from getting to Price or Halak or finish a check. I guess the have confidence in their goaltending and why shouldn't they? Oh, yeah, right. Sorry Price, Sorry Halak.

If all you think the Flyers do is hit then you just showed you don't know hockey either and are just stereotyping Americans. Montreal has been completely outplayed defensively. Biron would stand on his head to make a save. Every player on the Flyers roster will put their whole body in front of puck to block it. That is heart sacraficing your body to win. Do you think heart is outshooting someone? That doesn't take heart at all. Mike Richards is a great defensive forward and apparently you don't know anything about him. As for Begin's hit would you like to look up what interference is. And everyone was not saying that was a questionable call. Everyone on versus knew it was the right call. You just don't think it was penalty because the game was tied with 5 minutes remaining. Well look no further than game 1 with less than 2 minutes remaining teh Flyers were up by one goal and tehy called a penalty. Since when is it against the rules to call a penalty late in the game. Well if you want to be mad about game 4 look no further than Begin for making that stupid dangerous hit.

More Heart??????? Excuse me, have we not forgton that the flyers have been completely dominated on all fronts. Like i said earlier, you Americans dont know hockey. Just because the flyers are hitting everything insight does not mean they are dominating the games. It simply means that.....thay are hitting. Mike Richards stook his knee out on a player that was going to overtake him, because he has ZERO defesive skill, and what could have been a potential chance. Begin on the other hand hit a player that was completly out of the play, not to say that he did not deserve it, but the hit was not threatning the flyers offensive chance AT ALL. Every analyst admitts that the call was questionable. Heart??? who's heart are we talking about, the team thats being dominated on all fronts, the team that is being badly outshot? Oh ya, ofcourse the flyers are out hitting the habs.....right.... this means thay have more heart, because hockey is allllll about hits.

The Flyers are lucky. Montreal knows they are the best team. Just ask them. The NHL and Guy Carbenau know any team from Philadelphia are "goons" and have no talent. Why are the Canadians fans so upset about Danny Briere playing for Philadelphia...he is such a goon. Anyone who thinks the officiating is not in favor of the sacred HABS..just look at the facts. When was the last time you saw 2 minor penalities called at the same time on 2 individual players in a playoff game. When have you seen a teams top scorer mugged in front of th e refs and no penality called (Umberger mugged by those clean upstanding Canadiens..you know the only REAL hockey team left in the playoffs). Yes the Flyers are the goons and the Canadiens are the best team....the best team with all the excuses (like it was a bad call by the ref to call the penality Begin hitting Kappenen into the door of the Montreal bench). Play hockey and stop finding excuses for why the LOWLY Flyers are winning and the HABS are choking.

I had to copy and paste an earlier comment into my post. This kills me! "but everyone knows that you dont call a hit like that when a team is down 2-1 with three min left in the game." But apparently you call a non-existent kneeing call with 1:09 left in game 1? We're it not for that, the Habs would be playing golf on Saturday and not game 5. Get over it Habs fans; your fabled franchise is getting manhandled by a team that certainly has less talent...but more heart.

You Montreal fans did it again you complain about the Flyers breaks and the Begin penalty but then you don't even consider game 1 and the breaks u got and that lovely powerplay w/ less than 5 minutes remaining. Ok fine your not getting outplayed but your goalies sure are and that's why the Flyers deserve to be leading this series so get over it you can't go anywhere w/ an average goaltender and stop thinking Americans don't know s*** about hockey because I'm sorry but I know a lot.

Don't count the Habs out just yet, Rory. As you have stated there is a reason that these series are best of seven. All through the season, the Canadiens very quietly proved themselves the best team in the East, while those refugees from the prologue to "2001: A Space Odyssey" barely managed to make the playoffs. I fondly remember back in the seventies when Larry Robinson smashed Gary Dornhoefer of the Broad Street Baboons into the boards at the Montreal Forum so hard that there was a permanent indentation in the boards as a result. If only history would repeat itself and, say, Mike Komisarek would take maybe Steve Downie or one of those other throwbacks to the Pleistocene Epoch that the Flyers call hockey players into the wall with the same ferocity these cement-headed thugs might get the message that someone besides them is capable of physical hockey without the goonery. Go Habs!
