Well, it appears that Jose Theodore at least had an excuse for his poor play in Game 1 of the second round of the playoffs. As it turns out he was too ill to stop more than three quarters of the pucks he faced and to even sit on the bench after he was pulled.
So in light of the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 win over the Avalanche to open their second round series, the question now is, does Theodore become a modern-day Wally Pipp?
Nobody is suggesting that Theodore will never appear in the Avs net again, but after Budaj came in and stopped all 20 shots he faced and was clearly the best of the three goaltenders that appeared in the game, Avs coach Joel Quenneville clearly faces a difficult decision if Theodore is healthy enough to start Game 2 Saturday afternoon.
Of course, not having Peter Forsberg because of his persistent groin problems – gee, never saw that coming – and having Wojtek Wolski leave the game in the first period didn’t help at all. By the time Theodore left the game after giving up four goals on 16 shots, the Avalanche had lost three of its best players from the first round.
Budaj almost pulled off an upset in Game 1 thanks to his own strong play and a shaky performance by Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood, who managed to clamp down in the second half of the game. But still, the guy faced only 21 shots on the night and is clearly benefiting from a team that outshoots its opponent by ridiculous margins. In the first round, the Red Wings outshot the Nashville Predators by an average of 16 shots per game and in Game 1 against Colorado, the difference in shots was 15.
Osgood is not yet, however, losing games for the Red Wings and on a team as good as Detroit, that’s just as good as a goalie who wins them.
One of the reasons for Detroit’s fine play in the post-season has to do with the play of its Swedish star – which requires a few more specifics when you’re talking about the Wings.
Actually, Johan Franzen, who scored his third and fourth goals of the playoffs in Game 1, also added an assist and was the best player on the evening. Going back to late in the season, Franzen now has 19 goals in his past 23 games, which qualifies him as the hottest goal-scorer in the NHL these days.
That Franzen currently shares the lead in both goals and points for the Red Wings in this year’s playoffs is a testament to their depth, particularly since the Red Wings have had little trouble scoring goals in the playoffs. They are averaging three goals a game, which is a plethora by modern-day playoff standards.
If the Red Wings continue to outshoot their opponents by double digits in every game, there’s almost no chance they’ll lose a best-of-seven series.
The only thing that could stop them would be an out-of-the-world goaltending performance, which will require Theodore to either get well soon or Quenneville to make a very gutsy decision and for Budaj to reward him for it.

So whats Theodore's excuse today?

With all due respect, mr. Theodore's performance in the first round was against the Wild. Not exactly an offensive powerhouse. I will be throughly impressed if he plays ANYWHERE close to that against the Wings.

The difference in game one of this series was that for the first 23 or 24 minutes of the game the Wings brought their 'A' game and the score was 4-1. Then, the Red Wings took their foot off the gas and totally lost momentum and focus.

Umm...this blog doesn't even really make sense. If Theodore was actually sick, and it obviously affected his play, wouldn't that mean that he should return to the same form as Round 1 once he's healthy? Given his play in Round 1, the answer should be obvious to the question of which goalie to start. It doesn't matter if Budaj came in with his team down 4 goals, in fact that would leave him in a non-pressure situation. Who's to say Detroit didn't let up a bit after being up by 4? Theodore won the series against the Wild, to even suggest that one bad game leaves him out of a job is ludicrous. Brodeur let in a couple bad ones against the Rangers, maybe they should go with Weekes as the starter next season. Yeahhhh...that makes sense.

Everyone always says Detroit is too soft, too old, too slow, doesn't dump and go, blah blah blah. Detroit is consistently a great team. It's crazy to think that in the playoffs Detroit or any other team is going to man handle an opponent. Most teams are too good, no matter if it's a 1-8 matchup or anywhere in between. It's the small details that'll win the games, and Detroit always is improving it's details, and I think that is why they win. (and it certainly doesn't hurt that Forskins groin is always messed up either!).
Anyway, I say Detroit in 6.
Dallas / SJS. SJS is grossly overrated. I've heard all season how it's SJS's time for the cup. Ok they showed heart and made the second round, but Dallas just bumped Ana and now that they have the first round monkey off their backs, will loosen up and clobber SJS. ...and then the wings will clobber the winner hear, and go on to clobber Habs for a cup!

Believe me, I have no love for the Wings AT ALL, but they were good enough to win last night. Colorado seems to have had a complete meltdown. Theodore was a mess- I felt bad for him since he's been so good in the second half. Not shocking about Forsburg though- Foppa's pretty fragile. Detroit brings a balanced attack and they didn't win the President's Trophy by being a bunch of slackers. The Avs better get themselves sorted out or this will be over quick.
Jim- I think you're getting a wee bit ahead of yourself there. The puck hasn't even dropped in GAME 1 YET! Dallas and SJ are gonna be in a dogfight to the end and it will be an awesome series. Bad luck to make predictions for your team, bud. Dallas is ready and in these parts- WE BELIEVE. And if SJ does manage to win, they'll SWEEP DETROIT? Give me a break. You're dreaming.

Colorado's playing way too soft. 16 hits by the Avs' for the whole game is absolutely ridiculous. And zero hits by Adam Foote??? Where was he? They've got to be more physical to disrupt Detroit's flow and puck control. They need to rough it up immediately or this will be a very short series.

"highly-paid glamour boys"
this doesn't really make much sense given the salary cap. you need to come up with putdowns that actually make sense in the context of the NHL today.
i'm not too worried about losing to the sharks in the final. its tough to lose against a team thats on a golf course instead of a rink.
i'd worry about dallas if i were you.
Jim Reinecke (Posted 2008-04-25 11:27:32)
Yes, Red Wing fans, your highly-paid glamour boys will bury the Avalanche in this round. But wait. . .the Sharks are finally kicking into high gear, Nabokov will show that he's now the best goalie in the NHL and Babcock and his team will be playing golf (or in Chelios' case shuffleboard) by the third week of May. The Sharks will win the conference final in a SWEEP. So enjoy beating up on a crippled team now. . .it's all over next round.

Leave Budaj in net. When the Wings light him up like a christmas tree maybe the ridiculous "Avs will win" nonsense will cease. If the refs hadn't stopped calling penalties on the Avs out of pity (yes, pinning a guy to the boards long after the puck has left IS still holding in the 2nd period) the Wings probably would've gotten a couple more goals.

Colorado will win? Based on what? They beat MINNESOTA ... they are now playing DETROIT ... huge difference!
Tom (Posted 2008-04-25 06:40:27)
No way Detroit is going to lose this series. Even if Osgood breaks down completely, there´still no way they´ll manage to lose. There´s a distinct talent difference between the two teams. It´s a no contest.
Jordan (Posted 2008-04-25 00:34:45)
Steve is right. Colorado will win.

The Avs rock. I think that they can pull off the 2nd round upset.
