Providence Bruins' Scott Gordon named AHL's outstanding coach

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Providence Bruins' Scott Gordon has won the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award for American Hockey League coach of the year.
In his fifth season as head coach, Gordon led the Bruins to a league-best 53-16-3-4 record going into play Wednesday. The Bruins have clinched the Atlantic Division title and is on pace to claim the best record in the league.
The Bruins rank second in the AHL with 3.55 goals per game, and are first in shots on goals taken (34.24) and fewest shots allowed (25.55) per game.
A 45-year-old native of Easton, Mass., Gordon played parts of six seasons as a goalie in the AHL from 1986-92. He played on the U.S. team at the 1992 Olympic Games.
The award was voted on by coaches and members of the media in each of the league's 29 cities.

"Last year we came in as maybe an underdog, quietly. Got off to the right start just because teams weren't really ready for us. But this time around that's not the case. They realize we are a good team and they're ready to go against us, right off the get-go."
