Double OT: Tampa should consider dealing No. 1 draft pick

“…and the winner of the Steven Stamkos lottery is (drum roll please)…the TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING!”

Or are they?

Without question, the Lightning earned the right to select first in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft; first by playing really, really poorly this season, and then by winning the draft lottery. So now, for the first time since the Lightning won the Stanley Cup in 2004, there is some real hope they can begin taking steps to being a contender once again.

But is the first step choosing Stamkos, a junior star with the Sarnia Sting?

The undisputed favorite to be picked No. 1 is a slick-skating center in the mold of Steve Yzerman. Stamkos scored 58 goals and 105 points in 61 games this season in the Ontario League and had 11 goals in his first eight playoff games.

Given the way some kids have stepped into the NHL and made an immediate impact the past few years, you’d have to think he’d be the perfect candidate to slide into the No. 2 center position behind superstar Vinny Lecavalier in Tampa.

That would be the easy thing for Lightning GM Jay Feaster to do. But it would be the wrong thing to do. The wrong thing, that is, without first exploring other options. Feaster’s top priority must be to put the pick on the open market; see what it will fetch in a trade.

Start with the Los Angeles Kings and Atlanta Thrashers, the teams that are poised to pick second and third, respectively, to see what they’d sacrifice for the right to choose first. Two GMs who are under pressure to make their teams better - and gain a little positive publicity for themselves - might be inclined to dig a little deeper into their pockets to make a splash on draft day.

The reality is, while Stamkos is the odds-on choice to go No. 1, many believe there isn’t a whole lot of separation between him and defenseman Drew Doughty of the Guelph Storm and Zach Bogosian of the Peterborough Petes. So if the Lightning were to deal the pick and get an established No. 2 or 3 defenseman and a scoring winger to go with Doughty or Bogosian, they would be way ahead of the game.

And if the Kings and Thrashers aren’t interested, Feaster must explore other options. The further he goes up the ladder of the draft, the more assets teams may be willing to part with in terms of established players and draft picks.

Steven Stamkos is a wonderful hockey player, but he’s not Sidney Crosby or Eric Lindros or Mario Lemieux. He’ll be an asset to whichever team signs him, but where the Lightning is concerned, this is not about its immediate future, it’s about its potential to make one bold move that will ensure it has a realistic chance to move from the outhouse to within viewing distance of the penthouse.

This is a golden opportunity for Feaster to re-establish himself as a manager who can make a difference.

Anybody here remembers Feaster is presently down in the streets, begging for quarters so he can resign Vinny Lecavalier next year? If Jay trades the Stamkos pick, and then loses Vinny for a huge heapin' return o' nothin', Uncle Feaster has better start job hunting...unless another GM acts even more ridiculously and gives the moon for an unproven draft pick...In all honesty, Jay is better keep Stamkos...TB has money trouble, and he can be quite a bargain if he can produce early at a rookie salary.

It would be a real waste to let Tampa Bay draft Steven Stamkos or any good player first overall. They can't even develop players in their system! Gary bettman will say "It will be purfect if the Lightning draft Stamkos because it will grow the game in FLORIDA!" The NHL needs Stamkos to develop into a top line player and he can't do that in Tampa Bay! Let reeal fans watch him!

I think Tampa should definetely get Stamkos because other than vinny and marty we don't have much offence. Although Jeff Halpern and Michel Oulette were doing great at the end of the year. The also have a lot of defence prospects like Smaby, Lundin, Rogers and Mihalik and two great young goalies in ramo and helenius. Plus if they take Stamkos and sign Miro Satan that would be a pretty killer second line with either Halpern or oulette on the other wing.

Hey LEAF fans. You are INSANE if you think the Kings would trade the 2nd overall pick for Raycroft. Why do all you leaf fans pipedream like that. Is it that the Leafs are hockey Royalty and everyone else is stupid? I forgot that we must bow down to all Leaf Fans The Kings if they trade at all will trade down. Cammy will get moved at some point. Any sane Gm would not give a 4th round pick for Raycroft let alone the 2nd overall pick Also THe Moron that runs the Kings said publicly to season ticket holders that he is going to take a Dman even if they would have won the Lottery We do not need another forward we have a ton in the system. I would be shocked if the Kings go after a goaltender and the Kid we have comming is fantastatic So before you think your team is going to make all theese trades think about the team at the other end there are alot of teams that really do not want the overpaid garbage that skates for yor leafs everynight

The Idea of trading Steve Stamkos, is a bad move and Jay Feaster has made too many bad deals to not keep the no.1 pick of this draft. Steve Stamkos will be a fine addition to Tampa Bay. All the other GM's will try to bamboozle Feaster , again I say, NO DEAL!!!!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!!!

Tampa needs to keep stamkos there is no reason to get rid of something of incredibly high value before determining exactly how high a value, he has a lot more promise than a lot of other players, he is the consensus number 1 in a very strong draft year he definately is what the lightning need, the biggest problem isnt their D its their offense which has no talent offensively or defensively aside from the top end of st louis and lecavalier even prospal and richards are gone now, they just dont have the talent to attack so the defense is expected to make up for this and no defense could make up for the absolute lack of talent on tampa's offense. the ducks dont have much scoring but they keep the puck away from the net with their offense the lightning dont have that. they need to start strengthening their offense and that starts with drafting stamkos like a former comment if lecavalier decides not to come back they would get a lot more for him than stamkos and stamkos has the ability to fill that spot some day.

TORONTO HAS NOBODY TO TRADE FOR, NOBODY WANTS ANY OF THE LEAFS PLAYERS OVERPAID OLD PLAYERS. STOP PLAYING LEAFS GM FOOL. NOBODY IS GIVING UP 1ST RD PICKS NOR 2ND OR 3RD PICKS.... THE BEST FOR THE KINGS IS TO DO IS... TRADE UP AND STAMKOS, TRADE CAMIE FOR LUKE SCHENN FROM NASHVILLE PICK.. AND GO AFTER A BIG TIME D-MAN OFFSEASON

Dude...it's Jonathan Bernier coming up for teh kings ot Steve Bernier...he's a power forward in buffalo...The kings have also found they're current solution in goal in Erik Eksburg a stud goalie from sweeden (i think?) who played the last 20 odd games of the season when the kings played they're way outa last place and actually looked like a competitive team...Both Tampa and LA need defencive help but L.A. needs a verteran presence more than defence so the only thing T.O. shud be considering trading to them would be a package of Kubina (His no-trade clause has a thing in in that makes it void in the off-season if the leafs dont make the playoffs),a 2nd and 3rd round picks, Darcy Tucker, and then throw Andrew Raycroft on top just to solidify the Kings goalie position until bernier gets there...all this for the kings 1st round pick and Michal Camellari (Who is extremely unhappy in LA after the salary arbitration he recieved there last summer). This way they clear off 10.2 Million from the books (adding 3.6 on for Cammelari) for a grand total of 8 million of cap space...this would add a huge veteran leadership presence for the kings and help develop they're younger players (They're top 5 forwards and Jack Johnsson) Toronto Gets a solid young stud defenceman in Doughty as well as an amazing 2nd line center or winger for sundin depending on chemistry and such (This would also give them the option of not bringing Sundin back but i think they should). Then T.O. should try to get either Tampa's or Atlanta's Pick as well...that'd be sick...unlikely but sick... Trade T.O's 1st pick (7th ovrall) and (ideally) McCabe and Colaiacovo but if they won't bite or McCabe won't waive...then trade 7th oick ovrall and Kaberle (who has the same kinda contract loop as Kubina) for either 1st Ovr all and Paul Ranger (Tampa) or 3rd Ovr all pick and Tobias Enstrom (Atlanta)... Again Toronto unloads huge amounts of Cap and sure if they have to release Kaberle that would hurt but imagine Stamkos + Doughty playing in T.O nxt season that'd be sweet :) They could also go into free agency and pick up a top line left winger for Sundin (like Blake was supposed to be last yr) and not fail this time around and they'd be set :)
