DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche received bad news on multiple fronts Monday.
Avs forward Ryan Smyth will be out indefinitely with a concussion while teammate Marek Svatos will have season-ending surgery on a torn ACL, the team announced Monday.
Smyth lost consciousness and suffered a minor shoulder separation after being elbowed into the glass by Kings defenceman Jack Johnson. His head was knocked into the padded partition near the Avalanche bench.
Until Smyth is symptom-free, he won't be able to exercise or return to the ice, the Avs said.
Svatos, meanwhile, injured his knee when he fell awkwardly into the boards in the offensive zone.

Elbow? Is that what you call a clean hit by an American player on a Canadian player? How about a little honest reporting? Even the Avs players said it was a clean hit.

Exact same play at the exact same spot happened to Frolov earlier in the same game. Those stanchions need better padding.

That must be the same phantom elbow that hit Steve Downie in Vancouver a few years ago. Get over it people. On a side note Stevie seems like such an upstanding citizen now...

See what happens when someone does not do his homework. Hey why dont you watch the game and not write something you over heard?
Clean hit by far, bad timing...but karma? maybe.

Please define elbow!?

Very unfortunate to see an injury result, but this same play happens night in and night out. Normally you get rubbed out along the boards, but in this case, the "wrong place at the wrong time" happens to come into play.
Elbow? Sorry, but I don't see it. Everyone said it was a clean hit. Hindsight can be 20-20, but in this case it is legally blind.

Where was the outrage when Smyth speared Kings goalie Jason Labarera causing an injury that kept Jason out for a long time.
It was the elbow of Karma that got him.

The Avs have been snake bit by the long term injury bug - all to it's top line players - all year. It is to their credit they have hung in there. If their injury situation was even average for an NHL season there would be no competitive race in the Northwest.

Elbow? What elbow? Just a clean hit at the wrong place on the rink.

No one was talking about an elbow when that hit happened. See for yourself:

Johnson's elbow comes up after he disengages with Smyth to regain his balance. Not buying the "elbow" at all. That's a total reach.

Elbowed? I guess I was watching a totally different hit.

What a year for Smyth. If it wasn't for bad luck he wouldn't have any luck at all!
