• If last night’s events in Tampa are any indication, the Lightning should be shopping around left winger Vinny Prospal even harder than before.

Prospal – never exactly a favorite of head coach/grumpus-in-chief John Tortorella to begin with – followed up his two-goal performance in the Bolts’ 3-2 win over Montreal Tuesday with a post-game TV interview in which he called the evening one of the most rewarding of his career.

The 32-year-old Czech, who was dropped from the Lightning’s top line recently and subsequently had his ice time cut severely, also said in the interview that he felt his performance Tuesday shoved it up “somebody’s” behind.

Prospal refused to name the behind in question, but immediately after, and I’m sure by some strange and random coincidence, he was called into Tortorella’s office for a 25-minute meeting with the coach and GM Jay Feaster – while still wearing his equipment.

After that, Tortorella all but identified himself as the object of Prospal’s ire.

“I'm not here to be the happy man and make everybody happy,” the coach said. “I'm here to make calls as far as the game is concerned.”

Judging by the Lightning’s last-place spot in the Eastern Conference, the Unhappy Man hasn’t been making too many solid game calls either.

And now, though Prospal equaled his career high Tuesday by hitting the 25-goal plateau, Tortorella’s abrasive, divisive demeanor will almost certainly push Tampa’s third-best point producer out the door.

It has been all too easy this year to blame Torts and Richy. Ownership and a GM who trades away Richy's best linemate for a goalie who can't seem to stop a beach ball really need the blame. As far as Prospal - go ahead and trade him to another team and let them overpay him for a year. Anyone who looks at his performance will see that he has a great season and then a crappy one. He had 79 points in 02-03 then dropped to 54 in 03-04, then back up to 80 in 05-06, then back down to 55 in 06-07 and already has 56 this season. Let him go play somewhere else for a year and then he can come back (again) and score big points for us again.

Ian... you wish! Boyle alone is going to want 7+ and Prospal would be another Samsonov there. The Habs have a habit of quashing any player without lizard skin... thats why Tanguay doesnt want to go there. Boyle would easily command several first rounders and many a prospect. He's a top 3 defencemen in the league.

E Dawg is obvioulsy a little crybaby. That was a proven no goal by the NHL. Tampa has been hampered by an ownership change. The current owner limited salary, and would not allow them to truly address the goaltending. Blaming Torts is foolish and naive.

Huet, Ryder, Breisbois, and a 3rd rounder to Tampa for Boyle and Prospal. Habs get a good top 6 forward and top Dman, Tampa gets the goalie they've always needed, a winger who could put up some numbers playing alongside Vinny and St. Louis, and a veteran Dman who can play on the PP to fill the hole until the summer. Everyone is happy....

Torts aside - I think this was dumb of Prospal. Smart money would have been "I really need to credit my linemates for their part in the contribution I made tonight - without them it doesn't happen, I am enjoying to opportunity to skate on the first line again." A little vaseline makes the bat slide so much smoother and farther up.

I agree. It's time for Torts to be replaced. His abrasive attitude and constant irrational demands have made it IMPOSSIBLE for Tampa to succeed. He has lost all the guys in the lockerroom and from the outside looking in...his players have lost respect for him. Well, maybe not that dramatic but the players don't want to play for him anymore. Stop publically calling out your players John and take a good look in the mirror!

Tortorellas an idiot! So what if his team killed my Flames (although technically, we won Game 6 with a goal that no one noticed until it was too late). The guy is an absolute killer of any potential. I'd love to have Prospal on my team... Tort's team is in last place because of HIS errors, not the performance of Prospal.

“I was coming in to take the boards away and had some good jump. He bobbled the puck at the last second and I don’t think he saw me coming at all. It was a shoulder right in his chest. He’s eight feet tall, so it’s not like you could hit him in the head.”
