Source: Sweden to reject IIHF transfer agreement

The Swedish Ice Hockey Federation is expected to reject the latest agreement.

A source has told thehockeynews.com Sweden will reject the latest transfer agreement between the IIHF and NHL.

The agreement was re-opened by both the NHL and their European counterparts Dec. 13 to negotiate the current agreement regulating player transfers to North America.

European teams were concerned drafted young players were being sent to the American League, rather than developing further at home.

Under the old agreement, every European player drafted after the first round who was under 20 years old had to be sent back to their European clubs if they failed to make the NHL roster. After renegotiating, the NHL proposed bumping the age up to 22, with first-round picks still being exempt.
