Veteran Pittsburgh Penguins forward Mark Recchi clears waivers

Veteran Pittsburgh Penguins forward Mark Recchi has cleared waivers.

The Penguins now have the option to send Recchi to the AHL or negotiate a buyout of his US$1.75-million contract. The 39-year-old winger had been a healthy scratch in seven of the last eight games and did not accompany Pittsburgh on its current road trip through Western Canada.

Recchi has two goals and six assists in 19 games this season.

He won a Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 1991 and Carolina in 2006.

Recchi has 510 goals and 1,341 points in 1,357 career games for the Penguins, Flyers, Canadiens and Hurricanes.

He has always been classy and a truly great nhler. I think Pittsburgh would deal with Mark in a very appropriate way but as in life...it's a business and just that. I wish he catches on elsewhere. Not only for his talent but his character and what he brings to the NHL that way. You can usually replace talent for talent but not character for character. And in Hockey I believe we value character more. As fans. Will miss him if he retires but I think he will be happy with more time spent with family. The life we all wish.

Marc Recchi has been one of the supreme N.H.Lers in many years, if this could happen! Recchi retire and the Penguins turn around and fire their coach and then hire Recchi as their new coach that would be awsome.

I hope they buy Recchi out so he can sign on with another team at less than his current contract. He still has a little gas in the tank, it's unfortunate that the Penguins are treating with so little loyalty and gratitude, He has been a very good player for a long time...it would be a shame to see him ride off into the sunset in this manner. I wish him luck.
