Let me be the first to express displeasure with the "wild card" element thrown into the new schedule approved by the NHL GMs.
Now an Eastern Conference team with three better than average wild card teams on the schedule will be at a big disadvantage to an Eastern Conference that has to face three below average wild card teams when competing for the playoffs.
The wild card aspect distorts the playoff race (as it has already been doing for years in Major League Baseball). While the new schedule is a step in the right direction, I would have preferred that the NHL GMs had kept the "wild card" idea out of the game.
In addition, I hope that the NHL GMs will soon adopt Paul Kelly's idea for an 84-game schedule with more parity.
