Rapid-fire question and answers…

Dobber, I'm in a point-only league and with Sami Salo back on the ice, I'm tempted to pick him up off FA, but I have Poti, Carle, Ozolinsh, Timonen, and Visnovsky already. Who do I drop, if any? I also heard a rumor with Curtis Joseph and the Penguins: Any merit to that at all?
Scott, Edmonton, Alta.

Scott, stick with your team as is. Salo is too risky injury-wise. Rumors are Spector's department, but I don't see the Pens looking to Cujo.

Will Manny Legace and Tim Thomas continue to keep up their stellar GAA/SV% stats?

Jeff, Vancouver, B.C.

Jeff, Legace definitely will, the only drawback is his health as he is a little injury prone. Thomas is a very consistent and underrated goaltender, but his numbers are too good to keep up. He's bound to slow down a little.

Shutouts are worth three points. Would you swap Pascal Leclaire for Miikka Kiprusoff, now that he has six shutouts?
C, from parts unknown

C, Leclaire will keep up his play because the Jackets have bought into Ken Hitchcock’s system. However, he is very injury prone, while Kipper is a proven commodity. I would rather own Kiprusoff than Leclaire.

The most common question of the past week: What’s the deal with Jonathan Cheechoo?

For the third week in a row, I have to preach patience with the player in question. Cheechoo certainly won’t get the 93 points he had two seasons ago, but he won’t be the ‘bum’ he has been so far this year, either.

The past two seasons have shown us he turns it on in a big way in the second half. Last year he had 22 points in his first 33 games, then 47 in his last 43. In the final 40 games of this season, I can almost guarantee you Cheechoo will post 45 points.

Back to your letters…

I know the "never trade Crosby or Ovechkin rules," but I got an offer for my Crosby and I'd be getting his Ovechkin and Toews. Keeper league, standard points and GWG, PPG and +/-. Should I keep Crosby (I have Malkin, also) or is this just too good to pass up? Thanks.
Jake, Toronto

That is a very good offer, but you should still never trade Crosby, even if it's for Ovechkin and a future superstar in Toews. Since you already have Malkin, this makes it doubly important because you will dominate the league when the Penguins really start to roll. And you know that’s only a matter of time.

Hi, I have Jagr in my keeper league this year and let's just say that it's not going as I expected with him. Nobody seems to be after him for a reasonable price. Should I be patient with him or try to trade him for some dark horse? Thanks.
Jonathan, Montreal, Que.

Jagr still has a few good fantasy seasons ahead of him yet. Don’t trade him unless you’re ready to rebuild your keeper team. Otherwise, as you have noticed, the offers will be quite weak. When you are ready to retool, you can ship him to a contender for an up-and-coming star and/or some blue-chip prospects and draft picks.

Thanks for taking my question. I am in a keeper pool where defense has it's own stats G/A/PIM. What do you think Jack Johnson's offensive upside will be compared to Kris Russell? Also, do you think Jay Bouwmeester will ever be a regular 50-point defenseman? Thanks.
John, Brampton, Ont.

I think Bouwmeester will hit 50-points with regularity, starting in about three years. As for Johnson versus Russell, I give the edge to Russell. But two things to keep in mind; it's a close call and Russell has a defensive coach that may hold his totals down. I can see either defenseman hitting the 65-point mark in their prime, though.
