Don Metz passes away at 91

Don Metz, a Wilcox, Saskatchewan native who helped the Toronto Maple Leafs win five Stanley Cups, died in a Regina hospital Friday after a brief illness. He was 91.

Metz helped the Leafs in their storied comeback from 3-0 down against the Red Wings in the 1942 championship. In the four consecutive Toronto victories, Metz recorded four goals and three assists and scored the game-winning goal in Game 6.

After sitting out the first three games, Metz was inserted into the lineup by head coach Hap Day.

After that season, Metz continued to help in the Leafs success, winning the Stanley Cup in 1945, 1947, 1948 and 1949.

Don Metz is one of only three players to have won five Cups in a Leaf uniform. Teeder Kennedy and Turk Broda join Metz in that distinguished club.

Metz played in 172 regular season games, finishing with 20 goals and 35 assists. In his 40 post-season games, Metz accumulated seven goals and eight assists.

After the 1949 championship, Metz retired from hockey and returned to the family farm near Wilcox where he worked until he retired from farming in 1991.

Don and his brother Nick, who won four championships in Toronto alongside his sibling, have both been enshrined in the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Don Metz is survived by his wife Teresa, daughter Karen, son-in-law John and two grandsons Dan and Tom.

Dan praised his grandfather as a quiet, kind man who enjoyed being involved in sports and loved his family.

Funeral details are pending.
