THN.com Blog: Early observations

It's early, butÂ…

• It looks like Jason Spezza will win the Art Ross Trophy with no goals and 128 assists.

• The Bill Guerin, Mike Comrie and Ruslan Fedotenko signings look better, and, perhaps, more significant, than the Scott Gomez-Chris Drury signings.

• The big race among sophomores may not include last year's Calder Trophy winner, Evgeni Malkin. Instead, keep your eyes on the points battle between Colorado's Paul Stastny and Anze Kopitar of the Kings.

• Could we have been dead wrong? Will it be the New York Islanders, and not the Rangers, that succeed this season?

• It looks like Brad Richards is back with two goals and four points in four games.

• Ken Hitchcock can stop worrying about his fate; he has the Columbus Blue Jackets on the right path.

• My early prediction for coach of the year is Washington's Glen Hanlon.

• Can't you just see the Toronto media wondering who will start in goal for Game 82, the Leafs final game of the season, just like it did in Game 1?

• Speaking of the Leafs, Nik Antropov gets full marks for a great start. If he stays off the injury list, he leads the Leafs in scoring this season.

• The Atlanta Thrashers, a team that appeared to be on the cusp of something pretty terrific just a few years ago, could go 0-82. Suffice it to say Scott Mellanby's leadership is sorely missed.

• If the Los Angeles Kings don't acquire bona fide goaltending soon, they could be out of the playoff race before Christmas.

• Isn't it time Justin Williams of the Carolina Hurricanes finally gets the recognition he deserves as a solid and consistent offensive force?

• You can't blame Daymond Langkow for Calgary's slow start. He is proving, once and for all, he is a true No. 1 center.
