NEW YORK - Phoenix Coyotes tough guy Brian McGrattan has voluntarily entered the substance abuse program administered jointly by the NHL and the players' association, the league and union announced Saturday.
No specifics on his issues were given.
McGrattan will continue to receive his salary and benefits and will face no penalty as long as he complies with the program's prescribed treatment and follow-up care plan.
The program's doctors, Dr. Dave Lewis for the NHL and Dr. Brian Shaw for the NHLPA, are administering McGrattan's care.
The 27-year-old from Hamilton is in his third NHL season but has appeared in just three games with the Coyotes, collecting 12 penalty minutes.
He spent the past two seasons with the Ottawa Senators.

"It's a dangerous place, but a player can't put himself in that position, either. And I'm not saying it was a good hit, but anybody who has played the game, when you're in that position and a guy is beside you and then turns his back to you, you can't stop."
